Metal types and hallmarks
The Jewellery Details step records the metal, its purity and its hallmarks.
Metals and purities
- Yellow gold: 24ct (999), 22ct (916), 18ct (750), 14ct (585), 10ct (417), 9ct (375), 8ct (333)
- White gold and rose gold: 18ct, 14ct, 10ct, 9ct
- Platinum: Pt999, Pt950, Pt900, Pt850
- Silver: Fine (999), Britannia (958), Sterling (925), European (800)
- Palladium: Pd999, Pd950, Pd500
- Also titanium, tungsten carbide, stainless steel, gold vermeil, gold filled, gold plated, rhodium plated, mixed metals and other
Record the weight in grams. For pieces in more than one metal, add the others as additional metals.
Hallmarks
Say whether the piece is hallmarked, choose the assay office where you can — London, Birmingham, Sheffield and Edinburgh are listed, along with the Common Control Mark and other national marks — and describe the marks in Hallmark details.
Plated and filled items
Choose gold vermeil, gold filled, gold plated or rhodium plated rather than a solid-metal type, so the record doesn't suggest a karat-gold value.
